A serious earthquake hit parts of the country early this morning.

Ironically enough I woke up oblivious to the fact until reading a PM that had arrived via a UK forum.

Only three more sleeps then if all goes to plan will be off to the remote Chatham Islands for a week.

The Chathams are a collection of five volcanic formed islands kinda in the middle of nowhere, 800 kms . from the NZ mainland coast & the most easterly point of NZ .... also the first place in the world to see the sun rise on each new day. Only two of the islands are inhabited & the total population is approx. 600.

Has been a long held ambition to go there but every time it has been considered an alternative destination has presented itself, plus it is a relatively expensive place to visit. However finally come to the conclusion
that it was time to "put up or shut up" so went ahead & booked. Not quite sure what I am in for as it has proven to be bordering on futile to source info, but from all reports it would seem that those that have been thoroughly enjoyed the experience. By all accounts it is like taking a trip back in time as there are no mobile phone coverage, ATM machines, public transport etc. but the fishing is regarded as legendary so will just need to see how everything pans out. Hope to take plenty of photos however may need to wait until getting back to post any reports as wifi connection may be a problem plus not sure I want to lug a laptop over there.

This will be home for a week ... reckon I will be able to stand that !
