2eyegreen, it is in both utah and arizona.
grandpa- stripers, especially those size, need to be harvested from powell as there is an overabundance of them and they have overshot the shad population. It is getting better though; the body condition is much improved from what it was 5 years ago.

I fish with a can, 12 lb test, a trebel hook and a ball of powerbait.

I say if it catches fish throw it!

Slayer you need to get out there just so you can post a mega stringer of death and ruffle some feathers from the catch and release gang. Its been to long since you got things heated up.

It must be that devilish grin and glasses that make some uneasy.

I've been equal opportunity with my stringer of death comments. When I saw the stringer stretched out in the water I about flipped. When we need to harvest for control
that's a different story. I think we can officially say that Shaun will be eating striper sandwiches for a while.
Great job, I would like to try Powell in the future.

That makes me really sad to see you kill that many fish  Embarrassed

I go to lake powell every year, and the fishing is great.  But that just looks like trapping, if you can't eat your fish on the trip, it's trapping IMO

Hey if the state is asking the public to harvest as many as possible...YOU HARVEST AS MANY AS POSSIBLE...they are trying to clean up that fishery...awhile back they did it with smallmouth...they don't want ONE type of fish taking over the lake...i would HOPE that the state would know what they are doing...Lake Powell brings over 3million domestic and international visitors a year...my 2cents

I respect your opinion but I have to say, many times I take a trip and bring fish home so I can eat them at a later date.  I vacuum seal any fish I want to save for later (like let's say THE WINTER when the fishing isn't as productive) and those fish stay fresh for over a year.   I ate my last walleye fillets from last year in March.  I think it would be ridiculous to assume or require anyone to have to take a camping trip anytime they want to eat a fish.  As long as posession limits and bag limits are adhered to, then folks are well within their right to keep fish for the length of time they want.

...though there is a mandatory steak requirement at least one night for every three on any trip.  That's the rule.  No exceptions.  Grin

Yeah, steak is good for one night, fish for another, but you can't plan on the fish meal by leaving space in the cooler and leaving that meal at home, because you will get skunked and starve that night.

The state wants you too keep all stripers you catch to help all species.  Lake Powell had great shad spawns for the last three or more years.  The striper population grew and the size of the stripers grew.  Last fall in the lower lake they apparently they ate almost all their food base (shad) and are now loosing weight.  The upper lake still has just enough food that they are maintaining there weight.  The state expects a big starvation die-off in the southern lake this summer.

edit- the northern lake has had cloudier water, which has helped shad excape the stripers

In this day and age, it's not necessary to clear out your freezer and catch that many fish to survive!  That is ridiculous!

Show me a link that says they want you to keep that many fish...
