Default 9'' auger is it big enough?

I want to get a jiffy stelth ice auger and I am thinking getting the 2hp, instead of the 3hp, because of the weight. My question is have you ever caught or seen a fish caught that was to big for the hole, resulting in losing a fish of a lifetime over the hole being to small? thanks

You should be able to get any fish caught in Colorado through a 9" hole.

ePiC is right...

Circumferance (girth) of a 9 inch hole is 2 times pi times the radius or 2*3.1416* 4.5 inches or 28.27 inches...

Looking at fish charts on line...for instance here is an estimate for a King Salmon...

Quote:
A king salmon is 52 inches long and has a girth of 30.5 inches.
The calculation is as follows:

Weight = (52 x 30.5 x 30.5) / 740 = (48,373) / 740 = 65.37 lbs.
We dont have any submarines (fish) that big in Colorado...and its girth is only about 2 inches greater than the 28 on your auger...

I saw a lake trout on line that was 37 inches and had a 20 inch girth and weighed 18.5 pounds...

I think you will be very safe with a 9 inch hole...

And not all fish are exactly round...

The likelyhood of catching a fish in Colorado that would not fit through a 9" diameter hole is so small it does not justify the extra cost and weight for the extra inch, hp and weight.

I think you will find 9 is more than sufficient.

Dan

PS the larger the hole the more likely it is you will lose something other than a fish down the hole.

Good point Dan! I had a 10" auger when my daughter was little and only used it once with her and it scared the crap out of me to think SHE could fit down that hole! Bought a 8" and have had plenty of room for any fish I've caught. Pulled a 20# Lake Trout throught a 6" hole at Jefferson, it can be done, but the fish died during the fight. It's mounted for all to see though. 9" should be fine for all fish you might catch around here.

i like the 10, it gives me more room to get my net down alongside a big fish.

Great now Rad is going to kick my arse when he hooks a fish too big for his 9 inch hole!...what a great problem...

Jamie

Those 10 inchers can be dangerous...did you fish John the year they got like a foot of heavy wet snow the day before the contest and then the contest was in the 30's for temp...two of my friends while walking across John went straight in holes up to mid thigh...couldnt see where holes were from snow blowing the previous night...it freaks you out big time when your leg goes right through...no one broke a leg though...pretty wet and cold though...we got off the lake...it wasnt worth it...
