Hand Drill Auger Attachment

OK, was at bass pro yesterday and got suckered into one of the $25 kits to modify my hand auger to be driven with a power drill.* It actually seems like it would work but havent put it to a piece of ice yet.* Did I get taken or has someone actually seen one of these deals work? ???

Re: Hand Drill Auger Attachment

I think there is a discussion about this from last year. I did not want to spend much money on one so I went to the hardware store and made one out of pipe fittings for less than $5.00 (I think it was 1/2" iron pipe coupled to 3/4" pipe). You need a pretty powerful drill, with a 1/2" chuck. I also drilled a hole in a frisbee and placed it below the wingnut that attaches the auger to the handle, so that if the auger were to fall out of the drill chuck, I woundn't lose it down the ice hole. I think it works ok, but runs the battery down after 8 or 10 holes drilled. I had a 8" hand auger that I was using it with, but then got a 6" auger and I like that one much better (Strikemaster Lazer auger). I find that with the 6" auger it is easy enough to just drill manually, plus you get exercise and don't have to carry as much weight across the ice with the hand drill, extra battery, etc. Hope that helps.

Welcome Big Daddy! I've got one of the attachments, they do work, but Alpine is right it's just easier to drill by hand and cut down on the weight. The battery doesn't last long enough to warrant the extra weight. Looney

I think the problem with hand augers is not difficulty to drill but dull blades and laziness to change them often...

Reading on Iceshanty.com...it sounds like the Nils Masters hand ones cut pretty easily...provided you dont drop them on the ice...a little pricey...but aquarius is right if you change the blades annually and cover them...they cut pretty easily...and I have cut plenty of 20 inch ice at North Park contest...and a lot of them in a day...since you catch a few fish out of each hole and need to move...

Don't mind drilling my own holes, just figured there is no sense in making life harder than it needs to be.

Thanks for the help.
