A basic spud bar and knowing how to use one, it wouldn't have happened.

No need for a spud bar... didn't you see him jumping up and down testing the ice first?

But seriously... I spud the ice even when it's thick as thieves. When I have my kids I'll spud 50 yards in each direction and give them the boundaries.
