Default yak trax v. cheap ice cleats

I want to get my dad some ice cleats for Christmas. He's getting older and needs all the traction he can get, I don't want him to fall out there.

Should I go with the Yak Trax or the regular old ice cleats. I have an $8 pair that suit me just fine. Do the Yaks offer more stability?

I've seen comments that the Yaks don't hold up as well. My biggest concern though, is do the Yaks fit nicely around a size 13 snow boot? I know they make them in all sizes, but a good pair of snow boots are quite a bit bigger than a shoe or hiking boot.

Anyone that has tried both, I would love your feedback. I don't want to spend more if they are all the same. Thanks.

A lot of people like the yak trax but the problem I have found with them is when you have patches of glare ice and patches of snow. They will get clogged with snow and then become really slippery on the patches of bare ice. I have used the "Ice Creepers" and are by far the best thing I have ever used. They just don't fit my Mickey Mouse boots.

I have the same ones. Got them a couple of weeks ago Dicks had them mismarked from the end of last years clearance price $2.97. Seem to work pretty well, easy on, easy off. See how long they last.
