Default new ice auger

Got a new 10" lazer mag express. The DVD says to use premium gas. Do I really need to? Has anyone had issues with the 85 octane?

Not worth the chance for me. I only use premium gas in my Strikemaster Mag 2000. Runs like a champ!

jeff, what fuel mixture do you use ?
I found the "manual sugeested" isnt always the best.

The last couple years 40:1, I called StrikeMaster and the recommened 32-40:1. The first year I ran 24:1, but I wasn't happy w/ the peformance. The last two yrs I've gone to 40:1 w/ a little Stabil, it is running much better and will usually fire up on the 1st or 2nd pull. I still haven't changed the plug!

At this altitude premium doesn't do anything (sales gemic) 85 is all you need don't spend $, dif. at sea level. Not enough oxigen to burn prem,. well here. Did a college paper on this subject, much research. (your call) if it makes you feel good burn it.

FWIW: Spoke with the tech expert at Artisan (Eskimo). Says for high altitude, when you adjust your carb to lean it out, use a 24:1 rather than the standard 50:1. He also recommended adding a product called Seafoam Fuel Conditioner. It is a fuel stabilizer with other additives and lubricants.

The strike master oil, 3.2 ounces, is enough for a 32:1 mix. Does that mean add 4.0 ounces to get a 40:1 mix?

I see some confusion and perhaps a math error here. My chart shows 3.2 oz to be 40 to 1. 3.2 oz X 40 = 128, or 1 gal. More oil for 32 to 1, even more for 24 to 1, get it? The addition of oil to any grade of fuel lowers the octane level of the fuel, so that is why the recommendation to go premium is held as a general rule. That said, the altitude here does lower the octane requirement of any gas engine, all other things being equal. The timing and compression are the limiting factors in addition to the "leanness" of the mixture, so, in short, there is no real "right" answer that is best in ALL cases. Simply put, some engines are tuned to a higher performance level, so the fuel you use may matter in that case. Oddly enough, higher octane is harder to ignite, so some 2 strokes may actually run better with lower grade fuel, as one of the post suggests. I can't give you the correct answer you want, you have to find the best choice for YOUR equipment on your own.
