Default Best Ice Rods?

In the market for a few after breaking a few and wanting to upgrade...

I have a Bernie Rod for lakers, and I'm hopefully going to get some more if they are not discontinued. Otherwise, looking for some laker rods. Also, I need some lighter rods for trout and salmon.

Thoughts?

I did a bunch of ice fishing with Solesearcher34 last season and we made some ice rods from old rod tips and 1 inch dowels. It's always satisfying to catch fish on something you made, tied, etc.

I am somewhat budget conscious, so my ice rod purchases have been fairly modest.

Love the Bernie rod, but I got the baitcaster, should have gotten the spinning version. I didn't use it much during the ice season, but I did use it from the float tube last week. What a blast catching walleyes with a 36" ice rod!

Last season I used a couple of medium action, 25" Polarlites. They seemed real short at first, but handy to use when in the hut. Also, much less freeze up with the 5 extra large guides.

I also like the Gander Mt guide series Classic IM7 rods in medium action.

Both are, IMO, good performance and great values.

Check out Donald or Andy at the Aurora Gander Mt.

Good Luck!

If you go to some of the mid west ice fishing forums you will discover there are allot out there. Last year Gander had a bunch of guide series on clearance for 5 bucks regular 20. Maybe this year they will have the same early season deal great rods for 5 bucks.

Hey Kodiak,

The Jason Mitchells are sweet, but pricy. What have you heard about the Frabill rods? Some people swear by them.

Mike there about 30 bucks at most places. IMO no ice rod is worth more then $20.

Good lake trout ice rods are hard to come by, especially in a baitcast model. The Bernie Keefe and Jason Mitchell series are the best in my opinion.

For trout there are a lot of options, but it's all personal preference. There is no substitute for feeling the action yourself. I stay away from any rods that have any metal in the handle area, even the rings that hold the reel on. I mostly fish without gloves and those are just too cold!

I have never been impressed with Thorn Bros prices but they do have most of everything for ice fishing.

Check out the St. Croix Premier ice combo, it's like 30 bucks for a really nice rod and reel. I love mine. Very sensitive.

Ice combos don't have to be fancy to work though. My cousin landed a 30" walleye on a hand over hand jigging rod.
