Default Landing lakers through the ice.

I just watched the video on this post https://www.coloradofisherman.com/for...?topic=49944.0 and read the comments about how he landed it. How do you guys land the fish without grabbing the gill plate? Any tips?

Nice. I just watched that too and wondered the same thing. Maybe reach through the ice and unhook the hook...but then you don't get your picture.

I know they make those "fish elevator" gadgets taht work pretty well....but I can't see using one of those on a fish that big!

If the fish is lip hooked, I grab the jighead and slide it out that way. Occasionally the jig is not visible and you have to grab it by the gill cover, not in the gills, and slide the fish out. I hate having to do it that way. I'm always afraid I'll do damage. I would much rather be able to grab the jig head.

One thing that makes it easier is to make sure you knock down that little cone of ice around the hole when you start fishing, so you don't have to lift your fish up to get it out of the hole, but can slide it out.

use a leather work glove, grab the bottom lip and slide it out on the ice, don't lift it straight up.... lay it down as it comes out so you are not holding the entire weight of the fish by the lip

Thats how bernie showed me

Every other post you read will probably not explain it so accurately and well as this post. Thanks!!
Definitely remember the gloves, those teeth are very sharp on the big 'uns.

Seen it done more than once, I haven't had to but reach down, get a little wet and scoop the one's I've helped with so far. Bernie pulled a 36" through the ice for me last year, he's pretty much one swift motion. Pull on the lip, avoid the gills, get the head up outta the hole...then sweep the fish onto the ice. On Friday the 11th at Gander Aurora Bernie Keefe and Nate Zelinski will be there for a 1 hour question and answer session. They will then help work the store for equipment questions and hopefully for Gander...purchases. Your title here would be a great question.
