Default Nightcrawlers for ice fishing bait?

Ok, I'm still kind of new to ice fishing (third year doing it) and was curious about using nightcrawlers or trout worms through the ice. I know everyone uses mealies and waxies to tip jigs, but do earthworms work just as well? The only experience I've had with them was catching perch with them last year at the Chatfield gravel ponds. It worked just fine. Anyone else have any stories (successes or failures) using crawlers ice fishing? I saw that lake1177 tried them for suckers in a report today. Thanks for any thoughts / replies.

There was one day last year when I was fishing at Wellington lake the trout wouldn't touch anything but night crawlers. I seem to do best with waxies and mealies but don't be afraid to throw a night crawler on.

I never used night crawlers for ice fishing until last year. We were up at Deweese and couldn't get a bite using waxies and mealies. A guy in the hut next to us was catching fish left and right. He was using crawlers and let us have some. Turned the day right around for us. We caught fish on crawlers last Sunday at Deweese. I take them with whenever I go now.

Yupperz, good stuff for tubes and jigging metal. If you're going for panfish, crawlers are awesome! I just hate buying crawlers cuz we never use them all.

For what it's worth...
A few days ago I couldn't wait to get my vex on the ice, so I went fishing for crappie from a dock. I punched through about 1" of ice and caught about 30 crappie. All were tiny, about 5"-6". I used a small swedish pimple and ratsos tipped with crappie nugget powerbait. I knew there were wiper in the small lake, so I tried a nightcrawler on my ratso and the first two fish I caught were a 10" and 12" crappie. The bigger fish liked the worm as opposed to the crappie nuggets.

If you put them in the fridge when you get home they last a really long time. Also, when you break off pieces of a crawler never put that crawler back in the container with the others or they'll all die within days.
