Default Patching an Ice Shelter

Well... Went out fishing yesterday and noticed that my hut now has 2 small(approx 2-3") cuts in the tent fabric.

The cuts are up on top and are NOT rips. They are 2 almost identical cuts. looks like it was sliced by something when it was in it's folded down position and it cut through 2 layers

SUCKS!! As I just bought this hut NEW a couple months ago I am sure I caused the cuts in 1 way or another.. Not sure if it happend during the last trip out or during storage between trips

Anyway... I don't really wanna spend the $159 to get a replacement tent fabric from Shappell. I am worried if I dont get the cuts taken care of ASAP that the next time I have it out in the wind it will just shread it!!

Any tips/hints/info/experiences on patching it. I would prefer to just do it myself if possible. My wife knows how to sew. Worst case Senario I would be willing to take it in somewhere to get it patched if the price is reasonable. Like I said I can get a brand new replacement tent for $159

Thanks in Advance, Ricky.

Recommend you find matching material (nylon, canvas, etc.) and glue a patch on with canvas glue which is pure rubber latex and will work on almost any material, remain flexible, and is water proof. Good Luck! Mule

It's hard to tell what type of fabric it is made out of.. The exterior looks like canvas.. the interior looks like it is plastic or plastic coated :/

Here is a picture from Shappell:

They describe it as:
Heavy Duty 600D Polyester Fabric,Windproof, Waterproof and Fire Retardant.

Ricky,

Email or call the company (Shappell) and see what they recommend, I bet they get the question a lot...

Just the Glue should hold it?

Should i glue a patch on the inside and another on the outside?

Would it be best to use glue and sew it?

How about doing both.. Putting a patch on the inside and the outside with glue.. then sew them together?

I'm willing to bet (from my own experience) those cuts are from your auger. It's pretty common - keep the cover on it and you should be OK.

Well got a quick responce.. Not much help though!! I would have expected a better answer from Shappel!! -1 on there Customer Service skills in my eyes.(And I had heard they are great to work with)

Here is there answer:
"Try an iron-on patch on the fabric side of the tent, or you could sew on a patch of similar fabric. Sorry, but we don't offer a patch kit."

I am sure they would prefer I just buy a new tent.. But that is still the most generic answer I have ever heard. No longer will I be promoting Shappell as a brand

Ricky--

I would try this place. He said on another forum that he could replace windows in a hut and has seemed like a stand-up guy in what he's posted. Get it done right!
