Default Hot ties for the San Juan?

I know the usual suspects, but wondered if anyone had been to the San Juan lately and had some recommended ties... I have a few hours in the next week and will be taking a travel kit.

Thanks in advance.

i'm not sure about the specific patterns, but look into different beetle patterns. this time of year beetles can be deadly! also Damsel flies and hoppers in the back channels can also be fun!

Oyey,

Check out John Gordon's page over at Danica for some good patterns.

Pay special attention to Chocolate Foam Back Emergers, KF Emergers and red larvas.

Juan

The San Juan is pretty heavy on midges, so I wouldn't be afraid to fish with them even in the blazing summertime. I wouldn't be surprised if the fish were taking Kimo's tiny baetis patterns as midges.

just an fyi, my trip there a week ago the best fly was a rojo midge, bar none. had a lot of trouble sight fishing shallow but i started dredging deeper runs with a leach/rojo and started hooking up very consistently on the rojo. nice to catch fish on a fly you tie, and nice not to have to fish the #24-26's, they were all on a sz 20

Good one, AA. (smile)

BTW, when I was in Pagosa Springs, I met a SJ guide & asked him about the effectiveness of the namesake 'worm' on the river. His response was "Nope. They've seen too many of them." -- for what it's worth. (Not that you pros prolly needed that bit of info, but...)
