Default Thinking about starting

Now that I have the fly fishing bug, I'm considering fly tying as well. My father is an experienced fly tier so I'll just get with him. My question is how much it going to cost me to get started? I glanced over the equipment ar Gander yesterday and some of it was seriously expensive. For the guys that are just starting, how much did you spend in the first month?

Well, I try not to pay attention to what I've spent.

Probably good to pick out a few patterns and sizes to get started with. An inexpensive vise will get you going. I think I spent about $125 for basic stuff the first month for vise, tools, hooks, materials. It has grown quite a bit from there.

Probably can't go too wrong with a starter vise and materials kit either. From there you can upgrade. A kit to get you on your way would be about $100 +/-.

When I started, I bought one of those kits. One thing I had to upgrade on was my vise. I tried getting away with a chaep vise and it didn't work for me. It didn't stay clamped to the table, and it wouldn't hold small hooks tight enough.

Well since I couldn't findnmy stuff st my dad's house, I'm thinking about taking Kimo's advice and starting with a peak anyway.

Thanks to everyone who has helped out. I THINK I have enough knowledge and confidence to start doing this.

I started with a cheapo clamp on, and went to a peak several months back. No regrets, rock solid.

I'm guessing you're familiar with charlies fly box tutorials. Taught me a ton, and his shop can't be beat for materials selection/availability. Have fun with your new addiction.

I suggest you sign up for a fly tying class, too, through one of the local shops.

It will pay big dividends (and save you $$ in the long run) if you learn to tie correctly and to select materials correctly before you develop bad habits or waste a lot of dough on substandard materials.
