Default Comparaduns - Deer Hair vs CDC?

Hello,

New poster. Sorry if this has been covered before but I couldn't find anything on it. When tying comparaduns, do you use deer hair, CDC or both? And what do you think the benefits/drawbacks are to each?

I am just curious. I have always tied them with just deer hair, but reading online it looks like a lot of people use both materials on the same fly. I am going to experiment with CDC, but was interested what others thought.

Thanks.

Try snowshoe or z-lon type material - it makes less tie-in bulk and works fine.

I like using both because the deer hair gives a good profile and the CDC helps float it... Man, it's been probably 2 years since I have tied those...

I use elk hair. It may flare a bit more than deer hair, but that gives it a better profile IMO
Plus elk hair floats better than deer hair

Ya the CDC is way easier to tie in. I'm not great with deer hair though...

Check out a snowshoe hair blend with some ice dub too for a nice wing.

Different material has different properties and some may work better than others. For comparadun, here is a quick run down of my preferences based on OP's list.
1) I like Spring coastal deer hair as they have shorter tip and can be tied down to pretty small size (you can always tie them longer and trim them.)
2) CDC is good for small flies and can be easier to control for using dubbing loop.
3) Elk hair is a strong material with longer tip, so that the size is limited. I use that for drake and caddis.
