Default Troutbeads vs. Otter Eggs

Do you have a preference between these two materials? Have you noticed an advantage in terms of realism, durability or production?

There also seems to be a wide variety of colors available in both Troutbeads and Otter Eggs. I have heard that the orange hues mimic brown trout row and are better fished in the fall. Is there a color you prefer for mimic spring sucker, whitefish or rainbow row?

Thank you.

Otters are nice, I have not used beads, but the otters don't last long for me, for whatever reason, I end up losing them off the hook. I have not tried beads yet.

There is an obvious advantage to trout beads vs otter eggs in terms of durability... hard plastic vs soft plastic

I like how the tying section is picking up of recent.

I too have had a tough time tying with the otter eggs. I think they look great but they don't last for shit. The trout beads are great, cheap and fishing with 3-4x is like cheating

I read that using a veil will help extend the durability of the Otter Eggs. Here is a recent attempt of mine using arctic fox.

CoCarp, is there a certain color of trout beads you prefer? 6mm?

Nice. I've tried that too and it certainly helps.

Trouts carries beads for $.20 a bead and I liked the 6mm.

This was the one that looked best to my eye.

I'd just wrap the line through the egg 3 times and then tie on a #12 stinger hook 1.5'' below.

Hummm
I've had no real issue with otter eggs falling apart. I like the look of the otters eggs better than beads. I just don't use beads very often. I still love tying yarn eggs. As you get more of a pulsating action from them, and you can do cummed-on eggs ( above pic ) real easy to

Here is a video of "The Otter" tying the Otter Eggs. Tie it this way and they are durable.

Thanks Juan. I experimented with a few different ways of making the Otter eggs more durable. My most successful approach was to encase the egg in spawn sac netting. The netting stabilized the egg while maintaining its realistic texture and luminosity. Here a re a few photos of the pattern.

The true test will come in a couple months!

Good idea man, but don't wait months to try it... I have an egg on nearly every day on the water when nymphing.

I prefer peg eggs because of the weight... I rarely use any weight on my line anymore, only glass eggs and weighted nymphs...
