Default A Site that Might Help You Find Your Lost Camera

Everyone loses gear when they travel being itís in the backcountry, vacation, or just a trip to a local lake. Stuff gets left behind or falls out somewhere. The amount of time Iíve spent on the Colorado fishing forums has shown quite often itís a camera. I stumbled onto a website that may help you recover a camera that youíve lost or had stolen. The website is called stolencamerafinder. The site uses the serial number of your camera that is stored in the exif data of the image file. It searches the internet for matches.
I recently had 2 cameras stolen from me a Nikon D200, which I immediately search with an image taken from it that gave the result:
The 'NIKON CORPORATION NIKON D200' does not write serial information in the exif. See the supported cameras page for a list of models that do.
I do not have a sample from my Canon D10 to search with right now but will check when I get home hoping for something, but its not listed on the supported cameras listÖ so once again my hopes are dashed. The list of supported cameras can be found here: http://www.stolencamerafinder.com/listmodels

All digital pics record metadata in the EXIF which part of the jpg file... some cameras record the camera's serial number as well in that info.

I'm trying to remember which piece of software I was using the other day that popped up the EXIF info on some pictures I'd loaded onto computer. Might even have been on Photobucket... glad somebody got the brilliant idea of using it to track a camera that might have fallen into the wrong hands.

Thanks for sharing. Bummer about stolen cams...

The 'PENTAX Corporation PENTAX Optio 550' does not write serial information in the exif. See the supported cameras page for a list of models that do.
