Have him report the loss to the local sheriff.
It might show up on a pawn shop report.

We reported it to the Sheriff and Rangers. Their were alot of out of state hunters in that area. Chances are he will never see it again.

Law enforcement can make a report and enter it into NCIC as a lost or stolen firearm, which stays in the system for pretty much forever, if they follow up on it yearly. If it was found and not reported to police as found property, where I came from, that is pretty much stolen property if you are caught with it once a report is made. But after a reasonable amount of time is passed, the finder can retain ownership of the found property.

Sooner or later it will show up.
