The Ice Emerger is a pattern that I came up with by borrowing from a couple great patterns. I started by using the chassis of the great RS2. The fly has a divided tail, and a thin tapered body, using either thread for the body and rib, or using dubbing as the body. I also borrowed from the floating nymph fly, using the dubbing technique to form the “wing bud” of the fly. I use Ice Dub for the wing and vary the color depending on the fly I am tying. For BWO’s, I use a chocolate dubbed body or a thread body. The wing bud is lighter in color and I mainly use a U.V. pearl color. This gives it a bit of flash that can be a trigger. For PMD’s, I again use a chocolate body or thread body but the wing bud is U.V. light yellow. I fish this either down deep on a nymph rig or below a dry when the fish are taking emergers, just as you would fish the RS2. The Ice Emerger is sold at Ghillies Fly Shop
