Home made down rigger weight

I didn't want to spend $24.00 for a 4 pound ball of lead so I made my own weight out of a one inch copper tube.
Ran a heavy wire through the tube, pinched off one end of the tube so the lead wouldn't leak. Heated the tube with a propane torch while it was a vice while feeding it lead. Then attached a big 275# rated snap swivel to the front for the cable and my release gets attached to the rear wire loop.
I sawed and filed off the corners up front to keep it from snagging.
Scrap lead is about $1.00 a pound.
Next one I make will be a little longer so I can have a rudder I can bend to adjust it if needed. Just have to squish the rear of the tube after I fill it with lead.
I think the torpedo shape will track better wih less resistance then the commercial balls sold.

It will be interesting to see how that works. It sounds like you will be pulling it in line, (some what horizontal). Keep us posted!
