i have tried many but the only one that works well is the romer release, now that said, after not needing a downrigger for years i took both off my boat, i found that i don't need to fish deeper than 30-50 feet. on colo waters

Chamberlen releases are the best releases made No false trips. You can crank the pole over double and a 8" rainbow will trip it.

I've used the Off Shore releases with good results, pulling anything from little kokanee lures to 9" swimbaits. I find it does take a little bit of experimentation to get the line in just the right spot, but once you do, the releases are very reliable with few false trips. However, I normally use the Off Shore releases for the bigger lures, and go with a Vance's release (see below) for kokanee and smaller trout.

the nice thing about a romer release is a 6' trout will trip it but you can reel your canon ball up to your rod tip and it won't trip from that direction only a fish will trip it
