Default Attention - Password and Security Update

Hey all,

Over the next few days we will be implementing some changes to our forum password strength and password expiration policies. To make sure you continue having the best experience possible on the community, we regularly monitor the site and the Internet to keep everyone's account information safe. We've recently become aware of a potential risk to some accounts coming from outside of this community. Just to be safe, we are implementing the following changes to improve security even further:

1) We are asking everyone to change their passwords (and will force a one time reset). Along with every user on the forum, new passwords will need to be more complex, and can't be simple words (sorry, you can't have "fluffy" as your password anymore!). Please use a password unique to this community. Reusing passwords can expose your account indirectly when other websites (Twitter, Linkedin, Badoo, etc) are compromised; and

2) Your passwords will expire on a 365 day basis. When you login on the 366th day, you will have to change it.

We'll also be sending out an email to users to let them know about the changes, in upcoming weeks.

Thanks all,

Helena

As a note, don't use a password that you use on other sites, unless you want to be Zuckerberged

I really don't see the point of this at all. It's a fishing forum. I have enough stupid "unique" passwords to remember. I have no idea what "security" issues one would have with a fishing forum. Someone gonna steal my spots? Come on.

For the record, I will forget any complex password, please work on an easy password recovery system ASAP... This is a fishing site.. if you make it difficult, well, we will need you to help us make it easy

At my old job I had to go to the IT department and have them reset my password because I kept ignoring the notification window telling me I had X amount of days to update my password and eventually it had "expired."

The IT guy asked what my old password was so I could make a new one. I told him it was "password" and he about had an aneurysm!

After his short rant on security he asked me what I wanted the new password to be so I had him change it to "Password1"

He updated it for me but I had a sneaking suspicion he wasn't too pleased!

This is a good point. Safe computing = safe information

One of the most widely used passwords in the world. I understand their frustration lol.

Hmm. Any suggestions? Got anything fancy we could throw up there on the old avatar?
