Unless you plan to take your boat into saltwater do not put a bottom paint on the aluminum.

If you are painting the boat just to make it look pretty take the following steps:
1. Throughly clean the surface to remove any dirt and scale. A wire brush is best.
2. Apply a self etching primer.
3. You can then also apply an epoxy or zinc chromate primer. Apply this coat of primer within 24 hours of the self etching primer. Just make sure all the the primers used do not have any copper in the formulation or your boat alluminum will slowly be eaten away by galvanic corrosion.
4. For the top coat use a polyurethane marine grade paint by a manufacturer such as Trilux.

in fresh water and when you keep the boat on a trailer it doesnt really make much difference just use a good paint that sticks and looks good but if you leave your boat in the water like in a slip and especialy if your going to ever use it or keep it in salt water then you need to follow special rules for the aluminum because any metal in the paint can cause serious galvanic corosion in a short time

and like epic said paint lots of bait fish on the bottom it is like the only legal method for chumming in CO

I used a metal rust-oleum paint on mine and it turned out great nice shinny finish cost effective and easy to apply. I used a 4 inch roller that was a very smooth sponge. Hell all I can say is it cost me like $16 or $17 bucks and it brought my old boat back to new. Thats just my 2 cents

Why paint A aluminum boat? Go fish.
I painted the inside of a ugly boat. Know one noticed outside the boat. And I'd rather have spent the time fishing.

To really clean your boat before painting use a coil cleaner for A/C units. It is pink in color and can be picked up at most hardware stores.
