I don't think that Johnny McPowerbait is limiting out on big lakers.
I dunno he is cleaning up on big Pike at Stagecoach...

There has to be a happy middle...you cant have all the lake trout huge cuz the forage base will eventually crash...but you dont want to take too many either...no easy answer to get to a balance...

I kinda like the slot limit. I don't think you're going to get a lake with oodles of 40lb lake trout, they're apex predators in a lake and it really isn't a sustainable population dynamic. But a balanced population of lakers with a few real beasts, some larger fish, more middle of the road fish (usually the best breeders) and a ton of smaller year and two year class fish sounds appopriate and strangely could coincide with a pop of Kokanee....I'm just saying...

Whatever the answer is, it ought to include protecting some of the big fish. *IMHO *And I still believe that a slot protecting fish from say 24 or 26"-36" is a decent start.

Ummm...we're close to agreement...I'd pull for a slot limit where one could only harvest a certain number of fish between 24 and 36". Maybe 5 fish, maybe two. Protect teh smaller fish, which don't compete with the kokes and actually serve as food for the beasts, and protect the beasts. The middle of the road, who are big enough to be smart enough to not be easily catchable and to have outgrown pretty much all non-human predators go on the grill...in limited amounts.

Right now Flaming Gorge allows only 1 fish over 28" and that's with a very, very healthy population of truly big fish.

Maybe we have the numbers of medium and large fish to allow harvest of 1 fish in the slot. *Personally I still prefer mandatory release of all 26"-36" fish with a tag to allow harvest of only 1 fish a year over 36".
