Fly Line Identification
This may be a goofy question, but i've got some reels with line and backing, but don't know how to ID what type of line i have. I inherited the reels and they seem to be in fine condition... just wondering how to ID the line. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I don't know if you'll get full ID, but this will assist with the weight.

The discussion at sexyloops shows just how challenging an ID of unmarked lines can be.

For practical purposes, the simplest approach will be to try them each on your favorite rod and see how they feel. If you're going to fish these inherited reels/lines, then you can just go with what feels best to you.

If you want to sell them, though, you're going to have a lot of trouble with a full, positive ID. Not only is the weight relevant, but the taper is as well. (You can probably figure out the difference between sinking and floating easily, though.) HPH

Thanks for the guidance. I've got a good idea of the line weight as the reels were seated on the lower section of the rod and the reel ID helps me also. For example, the reel was seated on a 5/6 rod, on a Lamson Guru G2.0 spool. I'm going with the ID of a 6wt line.
The trick is trying to figure out is the line is Rio or SA or ??? At this point, do you think it matters???

My opinion would be that the brand of line is the least important part of it all. Lamson is a quality brand, and if someone buys the reel, there's a good chance that the buyer will purchase new line for it anyway. HPH
