Default Where to camp at Rcky Mtn Nat park

Taking the family to Rocky Mountain Nat'l park in a couple of weeks.* Going in my Pop-up tent trailer with my wife and 2 young children.* I've never been up there, I'm ashamed to admit being a colo springs native.* Any suggestions on the best campgrounds.* *don't know if it's better to stay in the park or near Granby *
I want to get some fishing in yet still give the wife some sort of vacation.* I know it's a stretch but we've got to do what we must to get fishing in.* (I know all the single guys are laughing at me right now)* I don't want to be around too many people, we are going during the week.* Any help will be appreciated

I camped at RM last week at Glacier Basin. The camp site was decent. The nice thing was that we were close to Estes which was about 15 min. away. We did not have to pack a cooler full of food. We simply went to Safeway or restaurants for food.

Although, I would not consider the camping "roughing it", the convenience was nice. My wife had a great time hanging out in Estes and my kids had fun catching trout at Lake Mary (it is not Grandby but it is fun for kids). We caught 12 trout within an 1.5 hours. Overall, it was a great camping experience.

Howdy,

If you are looking for less people, definitely hit the west side of the park (Grand Lake area). Great fishing and hiking and Grand Lake is a cool little town. Less busy that Estes. There are a couple very ncie campgrounds on the west side. Call the park though and ask them as they can be very helpful.

Best,

I'd have to agree with mountaindave... we camp the Grand Lake/Shadow Mountain area a few times a month, and it's AWESOME! For a family with little ones I'd recommend this place: http://www.windingriverresort.com/ nice ammenities (sp?) and you can pretty much bank on some awesome wildlife viewing in/near the campground... Moose all the time! Not cheap, but like I said, great for little ones and very close to great fishing.

If you are going to camp in the park. I would hurry and make a reservation. they fill up fast. But it is worth it. i go up there all the time. I know the book weeks in advance to you should check it out before going. You might not get a spot.
