Default Efforts underway to prevent fish kill at Antero Reservoir 01/25/08

EFFORTS UNDERWAY TO PREVENT FISH KILL AT ANTERO RESERVOIR

The Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) and Denver Water have decided to plow a portion of the snow on Antero Reservoir in an effort to prevent or reduce a reservoir-wide fish kill. Recent snowstorms and blowing winds have created 10-inch high crusted snow drifts on the ice, blocking the necessary sunlight for oxygen production for the fish. The crusted snow makes it unlikely that wind will blow the snow off the ice.

Winter fish kills are common in Colorado. However DOW biologists are concerned that low oxygen conditions are occurring at Antero a month earlier than usual, increasing the chances for a die-off this winter. Due to the popularity of Antero and the quality nature of the fishery, the DOW and Denver Water think it is a good idea to take this step to protect the fishery and optimize recreational opportunities for anglers.

“Low winter dissolved oxygen levels are common at Antero and other shallow, productive, high elevation reservoirs in Colorado. Almost every year we run the risk of losing some of the fish at Antero, however a complete kill is rare,” said DOW biologist Jeff Spohn.

Fishing regulations:

Bag and possession limits for trout is two of any size

Due to current conditions, the DOW highly recommends that anglers harvest fish caught (following bag and possession limit) rather than releasing them, so as not to overtax fish already stressed by the limited oxygen conditions.

Man craig you are fast.... beat me to this post. Its funny to me, everyone worried that Antero will be over fished ect. But now the DOW wants you to keep the fish from it or they might die. Maybe they should plow some of the ice? Use a zamboni? or something.

All I have to say is what an amazing fishery.

Remember the story of the Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein?

If the fish are already having troubles due to the oxygen levels. Why not close it to fishing until they get it plowed and the oxygen levels go up after the plowing instead of telling anglers to keep their fish. Don't get me wrong I'm not against someone keeping a few trout, but with as many people that enjoy that reservoir not being able to ice fish for a month or two seems like it would be well worth it in the long run.

I don't know...all I know is I have fished antero 3 times now and would like to have a chance at fishing it again with the hopes of a trophy phattie.

Whatever the DOW thinks they need to do to preserve the fish is fine with me. I hope they do more than is needed though.

I would agree about closing it....but to me that's not really fair to the ice fishers.

I'm sure even some of the hardcore icers wouldn't have a problem with it. We've all waited a long time to fish Antero again, and it would be a shame to have a winter kill after only one season back. A couple months, weeks, or whatever it takes is a small price to pay for such an awesome fishery.

According to Larry Falk's latest fishing report down at 11 Mile, he has Antero listed as "Poor' and better start coming to 11 Mile where the bite is. What a salesman this guy is... By the lack of reports coming from Antero now he is either correct or people are starting to keep quiet on their catches.

Quick, we all need to get out there and drill as many holes as we can. I'm sorry but puts a different light on all the cr arguments that occurred early in the season. I read the DOW post, and yeah they're now asking anglers to harvest their limit instead of releasing.

The fishing at Antero is slow right now... the fish are still there but they are gorging themselves on the shrimp that have been hatching. So instead of 10 fish days most people are getting 1-2 fish days if that. Just have to be patient, the big ones are still there.
