trout under the ice

i was wondering how trout behave in the winter under the ice. do they hold in the shallows, suspend in the deep water. i went out on monday and caught some fish but didn't find as many as i thought i would. i fished mostly 7 to 20 feet deep in spots that usually produces well in the summer. the action was better around dusk. do they move around during the course of the day? i drilled 5 or so holes and then tried pulling in fish with a spoon to locate a good spot to set up. marked fish at 20ft in early afternoon so set up there and got a couple of nibbles but no takers. later in the day marked fish in 7 ft so i moved there and caught 3 decent fish and had some other bites. where were all the fish?

8-12fow has been best the 4 times I've been out (the only 4 times I've ice fished ever though).

I hate to be "that guy" but trout are where you find them that day. You can pattern them a little bit but so many variables come into play it makes it very tough. Things change all the time. One day 5fow may work the next it might be 100fow suspended at 20fow. I try to start in 10-12fow and move around from there. I also try to find structure and channels. This is what I try to do, but I mainly ice fish 11mile so I don't know if this holds true for other lakes.

i scouted out the spots 7 to 20 feet but didn't try the deeper areas of the lake. it was fairly cold and i didn't really know where to start once i got too far away from shore. next time i probably should go out and try some holes a little deeper. i just figured that i was in a good spot and the fishing was just slow cause of the weather or whatever. i guess what i was really asking is if i was way off base fishing 7-20ft but it sounds like i just picked the wrong day for fishing shallow.

I fish 11mile most of the time because I only live 15 miles from it.So that being the case I've been in spots where you'll see fish suspended for half an hour and won't move.Drill a hole ten feet away and
catch a fish at the the bottom. At Suckers Cove lately there have been bunches of fish at 15'on the bottom..At 12'nothing.The next day in the Witchers Cove area I thought my flasher was messed up
because it was lit up like a Christmas tree.Still in 12' to 15',but the fish were suspended up to 4' off the bottom. Also there was a lot more structure in this area.I went out to 30' and no sign at all.Last week I fished Lazy Boy for 4hrs. from 20' to 6' and only got a bump at 6'.I agree with Medson 25 on the approach because every time I go,the situation and results are rarely the same.I don't think you're
off base at all.

Re: trout under the ice

depends on lake, chatty they hold deeper; eleven mile they are suprisingly shallow sometimes(considering how deep 11 mile is)
Id say 50% of the time they are right on the bottem, 30-40% they are towards the middle of the water, then maybe 10-20% are right under the ice sheet.....
I think the trout move around lots, ;)
