Default C&R Ethics, or lack there of!

as is apparent, i AM NOT a strict C&R or a kill it all type of guy. i do beleive that if your going to release fish you should give them every oppourtunity to survive.

taking 20 min to fight a sub 20inch fish on 7x tippet, to me is wrong! if your going to be releasing the fish use heavyer tackle and land it as quick as possible snap your picks, revive it and send it on its way. i personaly have landed 20 inch cutts on 2 pound test in just a min or 2.

so here is a question. how long is it OK to fight a fish, you know a general guideling "if i cant land my fish in under Xmin" then it is time to step up to a heavyer rig?

I use the heaviest tackle possible.  Im not trying to set line class records, catching the fish is more important to me.  Still though it can hurt the fish to horse it in to quick, so I bring them in as quickly as possible while trying not to damage the fish by doing it to fast

I do not know the exact answer to yer question though

Well, at least the new policy is working. Glad we won't have a bunch of reports discussing this.

I try and get the fish in quickly unless it's coming from very deep water. I've horsed a few fish on 7x, and I've broken a few more off, it happens.

I fight them for 20 minutes at a minimum. When they get close to the boat, I fling them up in the air to land in the boat. If I am using a heavy baitcasting pole, sometimes the fish can go as high as 15 feet in the air before they smack the boat. It is pretty cool, to hear them make funny noises after the fish hits the boat.

I then gill hook it, get a stiff arm picture and let it go. <a href="http://www.clipartof.com"><img src="http://www.clipartof.com/images/emot..._big_grin.gif" alt="Free Smileys & Emoticons at Clipart of.com" border="0"></a> <a href="http://www.clipartof.com"><img src="http://www.clipartof.com/images/emot..._big_grin.gif" alt="Free Smileys & Emoticons at Clipart of.com" border="0"></a> <a href="http://www.clipartof.com"><img src="http://www.clipartof.com/images/emot..._big_grin.gif" alt="Free Smileys & Emoticons at Clipart of.com" border="0"></a>

funny...I just made a post about this in the flyfishing section after reading a report concerning a member using a flyrod that was waaaaay too light for the type of fishing he was doing.

The fish you fought a very long time may swim away at first, but it likely will get metabolic acidosis and die later.

I would say it depends on the fish and time of year though, how long a fight will take befor metabolic acidosis is likely...for trout, if it's in the summer and the water is fairly warm, a fight any longer than 4 or 5 minutes will most likely lead to that. In the fall/winter though, 10 minutes is a good cutoff.

Metabolic acidosis is most common in trout but I know pike get it fairly easy too...never really seen it in bass or catfish, but of course it is possible.

I gaff everything. I hate touching fish. So for me, the length of the fight doesn't matter.
Most survive quite well (depdending on where they get stuck, gills are not good). You'd be amazed.
