Default The "Where's the open water?" thread.....

I was thinking it might be nice to get a list going of the places that have open water. I'll update it as other places open up as well. I went and explored the lower Poudre today. Below is what I saw If you know of open water and don't mind sharing.....just post up.

Lon Hagler- open (per walking eagle's report)

Poudre-mostly frozen in the canyon...a few spots to wet a line (2/15/0

Poudre in town....open water in places iced in others (2/15/0

Watson- entire north end from the NE handicap dock up to the inlet is open water 2/19/08

Metro area ponds?

Boyd- Open water east of the boat ramp( per moony's report)

Horsetooth?

Blue river off I-70- Open

South Platte-open from the spillway to commerce city

Carter Lake- Just starting to open up... enough open water at the north end to cast into on 2/15/08

Barr Res-150 to 200 yards of open water on the north side 2/15/08 (per bferg_80002's report)

St Vrain through Lyons 2/19/08- open and fishable

Carter Lake has enough open water at the north end to cast into, but it is not really ready for open water fishing yet.. The north end always opens up first. The water is very low and they are still working at the south dam, so they won't be filling it yet. Here is what it looked like today.

North end of Carter as seen from the North Pines boat ramp. There are two fishermen on the small point on the near side, but all you can see from this view is a dark speck.

the south platte has been open all winter, brah.

anyway, lambdebois... to answer your question. yeah, the river holds alot of fish. there's trout, catfish, a motherload of carp, and stray walleye. the river is very fishable in littleton just below the spillway, just walk along the bank and find the deep holes and eddies... it's nice all the way up to the bear creek confluence, and that's where it gets filthy from the runoff and discharge from the streets. there's still fish in it, people on this forum have caught large trout all the way up past denver around the sewage plant. i imagine the warm water out of there holds alot of big fish, although i would probably seriously refrain from eating them. upstream from there, the south platte has many deep holes that hold catfish and monster carp... especially about a mile above 88th where the river widens a bit.

I have seen fish caught out of there around brighton and heard stories of them caught out of there below brighton through the plains. I hope that helps, bro.

Notice I said open water at the outlet, which as you know was frozen for a while.

Thanks for the advice Lakester. I appreciate it.

I'm not sure where I'm going to go today to look for some open water. Probably somewhere north of the south platte closer to the Fort. Hoping to get into some browns and maybe some rainbows today.....

Oopps I just posted this on the Reports section but I drove past Barr Res. yesterday and there is about 150 to 200 yards of open water on the north side.

If the damn weather would make up it's mind... I would!

today they had flash flood, and tonight is icestorm warnings... and tomorrow, winter storm warnings.... crazy s**t.

I'm a trooper though, I'll be out there for round 3 tomorrow..... gonna try other places I was eyeballing. I'd rather deal with snow than freezing rain.... I thought i was gonna die today.
