Default size of sucker meat for channel cats. (skin on or off)

I have been trying some sucker meat for cats but haven't had much luck should I leave the skin on or just fillet the whole sucker and use small chunks of the fillet?

Unless you can find FRESH sucker meat, I would recommend anchovies or half of a dead minnow. I use a piece of meat about 3" long and 1 inch thick.

Leave the skin on...it stays on the hook better.

How big are your suckers? If under six inches and fishing for cats three, four pounds or larger...I'd use the whole bait..

Personally, I'd still use shad, or anchovies...more oil..more smell...

And actually, I'd use fresh chicken livers or shrimp before any of those baits except right after ice off...Shad in that situation..

Blood or cheese baits if the water's real warm.

Ive caught some nice ones on sucker. I like those baby ones from sportsmans that are aroun 4'' long. I just use um whole and cut a slit in thier belly so the scent ooses out. Also put a fresh one on every half hour.

Like hobie said though I would have a second rod out with another bait.

Id say it depends on the situation and what lake you are fishing at.

I traditionally stuck to cutbait and shrimp for bigger cats, but I found that cut bait works better in a river or spillway where there is some kind of flowing water.

in ponds, livers work good as well as crawlers and worms...and from some sources, mussels.

cut the sucker in 1" thick slices and use good hooks that don't cover the hook point and leave the skin on but always use fresh bait.or fillet the sucker in thin slices and put on hook

If you only knew how jealous I am..............good luck man.

In '98 I passed out on deck while I was supposed to be maning the 2 cat rods..............I woke up just in time to hear the last of the drag and watch as the knot on the spool snapped. Please catch the S.O.B. that did that to me.
