Default Oops I snagged the wrong fish

With snagging season upon us I have a question. If you are snagging kokes and snag a sub-legal fish of another species than what happens to that fish? Does it go back in the water injured and end up dieing or what?
thx

Regardless of the species, if it is foul hooked, by law it must be released. Draw your own conclusions as to the fate of the fish.

I think most people keep them from what I've seen walking the shore of GM during snagging season. Since the bows like those koke eggs they're bound to end up in the mix.

If you see it, call Operation Game Thief. The call is toll-free within Colorado at 1-877-COLO-OGT, Verizon cell phone users can dial #OGT. https://www.coloradofisherman.com/for...?topic=22995.0

From the regulations---

5. Snagging

a. Snagging shall be used for the taking of kokanee salmon only, and only where specifically authorized in regulation #108.

b. Snagged fish species other than kokanee salmon must be returned to the water immediately upon catch.

It's a barbaric excuse for fishing and ought to go the way of the dinosaurs. They'll hit flies and lures, so learn to fish and catch them in a sporting manner.

But I'm sure, Jay, that you didn't intend to elicit anyone's opinion on that subject. Right?

Right! I guess I just don't get it. If you snag a fish other than a Koke than it is unlawful but at the same time letting that fish go to die is unethical so its a no win I guess.

Some people say the same thing about ripping a weigthted treble hook into the side of a spawning fish, too.

I don't think so, but Ill let the snaggers speak for themselves on that one.

If we're going to let people snag, why not avoid the whole "bycatch" issue and just let them use big river seines. It's just as "sporting" and they could all have their limits in a few minutes.
