Default ODC 816 Pontoon ?'s

Does anybody on here have one of these models? I have a chance to pick on up for about 1/4 of new price, but I am not sure if I want an 8' toon, I already have a 9' fish cat but a spare would be great. Package also includes #35 minnkota, battery and charger. Just curious if anybody has the same model and any thoughts.

If you buy a Creek Company ODC 816 as a spare pontoon, I bet you'll soon make it your primary 'toon.

I bought my ODC 816 in Jan '08, and have used it at least ten times this year. I love it and have no objections with its design or construction. The pontoon cover material is strong and well-sewn. All metal parts fit exactly.

Its biggest advantage over any of the Fish Cat pontoons is weight. The ODC 816 has an aluminum frame, and at 45 lbs, the ODC 816 weights at least 10 lbs. less than the most lightweight Fish Cat pontoon. This can be a huge advantage when transporting the ODC to the water's edge.

For your trolling motor and battery, you will need the motor mount/anchor drop system #856, $79.99.

Two other advantages of the ODC over the Fish Cat:
1) Lifetime guarantee, compared to five years for the Fish Cat.,
2) Local customer service. The Creek Company's HQ is located in Steamboat Springs, and these folks have been very responsive to my needs and questions.

I respect the quality of Outcast products because I still own a Fish Cat float tube.
However, IMO, the ODC 816 is the best small pontoon value on the market today.

Thanks Irish, I just got home with it. The first thing that struck me was the weight, super light compared to my Fish Cat, and it already had the motor mount package, and it came with a trolling motor, battery and charger all for $200.

FLYFISHGEEK ,

That is one sweet deal. I bet you saved at least $300 with your ODC 816 rig. You will soon appreciate the reduced weight and manufacturing quality of the ODC.

After 2 - 3 outings with my ODC 816, I made only two "personalizations" you may consider:

1) The plastic covering on the oars and the plating on the oar locks are both slick surfaces, and I could never tighten enough the bolts/wingnuts on the oar locks. The simple solution is to buy for about $3 - $5, the smallest bicycle inner tube you can find. Cut out two, 2-in. pieces, and mount each piece over the spot on each oar where you want to attach each oar lock, and tighten. Now, the oars will not shift, move or rotate in the oar locks.

2) For getting my pontoon, loaded with gear, to the water's edge, I crafted my own "transporter." The details are described in my post: Transporting a Pontoon on May 01, 2008, 01:40:42 am. The Photobucket link is no longer active, but if you go to that link you'll see me in the "Time-out t..." photo.

Enjoy your ODC 816. It was a very smart purchase.
