Default Fly fishing only sign(s)

On the east river at the roaring judy hatchery there are signs that read "Fly Fishing Only".  What exactly does that mean?  Fly rod only?  What constitutes a fly?  Is a hand tied jig, a fly?  What would be the difference between a hand tied jig and a hand tied weighted wooly bugger for instance?  Is is ok to use a spin rod with a fly/bubble setup in that section?  Would it be ok to use a spin rod with a wooly bugger there?

Can anyone shed some light on this?

What a confusing sign IMO.

Thanks.

Yes to all of the above. Mostly I think It means fishing is by fly and lure only, as in no bait, and no scented products. At least that is the rule as I understand it.

To me, that doesn't make sense, they have signs for artificial flies and lures only, but these signs specifically say "Fly Fishing Only", I have a picture of the sign at home I can post later for those that have not seen these signs. I'm not saying you are wrong, just saying it still seems real fuzzy to me.

it may not be the "lure", "fly" or "bait" it may be the fishing method. a fly rod only perhaps?

can't see how one can toss metal on a fly rod, but certainly one can toss a fly with a spin/cast rod - with the aid of a buddle or not if its a clousser or wolly bugger.

perhaps it requires the full ensemble of fly fishing wear - waders, vest, funny hat, all the dangling tools, etc. and the high end expensive suv in the parking lot ain't that the typical fly fisherman.

good question.

Maybe whoever made the sign never fished before and doesn't realize there are other methods of fly fishing other then a traditional fly rod setup. Either that or they were on crack...? Were there any words misspelled by chance?

well, I reckon there in lies the sticky wicket. I am not familiar with these signs. I have seen fly and lure only, and all fish must be released immediatly signs. To the best of my knowledge, (albeit I may not know all the facts, ) there are no places in this state where the fishing is limited by what type of pole you can use, just the type of attractant. I would guess that the difference is maybe no lures, only flies or fly and bubble, but since I don't know for sure, I will keep my mouth shut for a while, and hopefully some one with more knowledge will chime in. I did check the DOW website, and could find no such restrictions in the "restricted waters" section.

You are sure it wasn't just a defaced fly and lure only sign right?

hopefully someone else chimes in on this one.....

Dave

Actually lures are NOT allowed, it is 1 of only 3 places I know of in the state that is FLY only on public water, this is from the regs book. I do believe you can use a fly and bubble, but I know spinners are not allowed.

105. East River Gunnison County a. From the upstream property boundary at the Roaring Judy Fish Hatchery downstream to the confluence with the Taylor River: 1. Fishing is by artificial flies only. 2. The bag and possession limit and minimum size for trout is two fish under 12 in length. 3. The taking of kokanee salmon is prohibited. b. From the Roaring Judy Fish Hatchery outlet downstream to the Roaring Judy property boundary: 1. Fishing is prohibited from August 1 through October 31

NICE, the signs were made by the DOW, for the protection of the largest Kokanee spawn in the state.
