Default High mtn lakes late in the season

Has anyone had any good luck fishing high mountain lakes just before ice on? I am considering fishing some cutthroat lakes this weekend at around 10k. Second question being, are they going to be frozen this weekend?

First answer, go and do it!

Second answer, that's the chance you take this time of year, LoL. Just take a hand auger with ya!

Yes...Choose a lake with good exposure...One that gets hit by the sun all day long, instead of a couple of hours a day...10,000 feet shouldn't be a problem. You might have some skim ice in the morning...

hobie, you've had some decent cutthroat fishing this late in the season?

lakes are actually at 10,400 or so with plenty of sun exposure.

Absolutely, we were going to head up this weekend before deciding to head out to Utah...Jeff..(Batman) and I already have a trip planned for a high mountain lake, as soon as the ice is safe also..

I was at 9,200 this weekend and all the lakes had ice on them. Might be a crap shoot if you are over 10k

I was at 11,800 on 10-11. There was ice on shallow puddles and my guides, but not on the lakes.

I would pick a lake down south. Ice fishing high lake sounds like fun.
