Default ???? Spawning Fall Walleye ????

Ok here is a good question..
In fishing last night I kept two 17" fish. One was really really fat.
Once I cleaned the fish I checked the belly and sure enough they were to huge egg sacks.
The other fish was a male and did melt a bit on the cutting board.

Has any one else ever seen this before?? I have never, thought it was strange but interesting.

I am kicking myself for not taking pictures but it was very late and I wasn't thinking.

Are you sure you weren't looking at the lungs? I noticed the lungs were much bigger than usual when I cleaned mine last night. I also saw a silver shad pop out of the stomach.

Fish have lungs? Are you referring to another organ? Hell, I'll answer my own question, fish dont have lungs.

Not this late in the year...or this early. I have seen eggs and milt as late as May but never in the fall.

I'll be headed out again Friday and this time will bring a few home so I'll take a look.

LOL- Thanks for clarifying. I guess the bladder and egg sack were both swollen.

They were eggs no mistaking them... I opened them up and looked closely. I am glad to see I am not losing my mind though. And and don't forget the male did melt.

I almost got real smart arse (very unlike me ) and asked if the lungs were behind the shoulder blades....

Anyway - walleye are fattening up this time of year so some of what you might see is fat or gorged stomachs with digested material...but Wanzek knows walleye and knows the difference. I suspect what he saw is eggs and milt...I have just never heard of it this late...or early.

I caught a eye at Glendo in August one year that had eggs. There was something defintely wrong with the fish though, very swollen, I assumed for whatever readon it did not drop its eggs that spring.

I have caught walleye (females) that have not had the opportunity to completely spawn due to weather changes or whatever reason and they have started to reabsorb the eggs. They look smaller and harder...kinda red or orange in color.
