Default Kicker Motor?

Is a four stroke 3.5 hp kicker motor enough for a 18 ft aluminum fishing boat to troll with? I found one but don't know if it big enough to troll with or should I look for a 7-10 hp kicker.

Seems small to me. Not sure how fast you plan to troll or what type of control you'll have if the wind picks up

IMO, it's too small to be practical for an 18' boat.

It will work, but if it is windy, it will struggle. I would say a 5 is min.

I had a 6hp on a 17'6" boat and it was a struggle in wind greater than 15-20mph. I'd suggest a bigger kicker.

It would be perfect for my 13 footer... maybe small at 18.

Go with a 9.9 four stroke with a long shaft. Yamaha makes them. The long shaft bites deep in the water and gives you great control. The 9.9 falls just under the 10 hp some likes like Barr Lake have. The four strokes are great on gas. You have to consider the weight of your boat too.

I have had my Lund since 1992 and my big motor has very limited hours on it. I am on my second kicker moter and my third front mounted electric motor. Go with a 9.9 and you will be happy.

I have a 15hp yamaha 4 stroke on my 21 walk around. The displacement of the motor is the same as a 9.9 - that means the torque is the same as a 9.9. My friends in Michigan troll 24-26 foot boats 2-3 mph with a 9.9 at low rpms. You don't need a 9.9.

I troll at the very bottom end of the rpm/power curve of a 15 hp(i wish it idled slower - and I have a high thrust low pitch prop), a 6 hp would have been a better choice for my boat if I was only relying on the motor for trolling. The 15 hp is my back up motor off shore, it pushes my boat 5.9 mph wide open and will get be back to shore in a wind if the big motor failed.

I would think a 3.5 hp would be fine if you only want it as a kicker. A 3.5 hp would be more powerful than most any electric out there.

I think it may be too small. I used to have a 5 HP 2-stroke on an 18' Tri-Hull. It was borderline at best, and I think the older 2 strokes have more power than the new 4 strokes, HP for HP.
