Default Patrick F. McManus

For the past few years my favorite thing to read in "Outdoor Life" magazine has been the "Last Laugh" written by Patrick McManus.

Over the years I have collected the majority of his books. If you haven't read them, you definatley need to! Very funny stories about fishing and hunting. Every book has at least a few stories that had tears in my eyes laughing out loud. Even my wife enjoys them, and has read every book I own. She has been driven to tears from his humerous tales as well (although often thinking of comparessins between the writer and me and my fishing buddies.. ).

His stories have graced the pages of "Outdoor Life" for over 25 years, and before that he was in "Field & Stream" magazine for many years.

The next issue (April) of "Outdoor Life" will hold the last installment of "The Last Laugh" as Pat is taking a well deserved retirement. Congratulations to him! His stories will definatley be missed by me and I'm sure all readers. Thank you to Mr. McManus for all the memories you shared and the laughter your readers recieved from them.

Yeah, Pat is GREAT!

His best books in my opinion are:
Never sniff a gift fish
A fine and pleasant missery
and They shoot canoes don't they.

All time out door classics.

James I love Pat McManus!

When I was a kid I would read his books and laugh out loud so loud that I would wake up my parents.

I saw him at the old Stone Lion once and he signed a bunch of my books.

I need to check out some of his new stuff.

Love Pat McManus Last Laugh! Some of my favorite reading material & a nice treat at the end of Outdoor Life. Always entertaining, have laughed out loud reading some of his stories, & somehow most of us can relate. Have enjoyed his stories throughout the years, will miss his writing alot.

McManus is a classic. I too have laughed at his stories which in our group ring all to true. Rancid Crabtree is alive and...maybe well? The magazine is not nearly as good as it once was but I guess alot of things have changed in the world. Jack Oconner is and was the best hunting adventure writer, no one has come along to replace him.

Thanks for the update.

I have a big old compilation of three of his works (Fine & Pleasant, They Shoot Canoes, and something else, all in one hardcover.) I read it all the time.

Well, he's a prolific fella. He's earned his retirement.

If you guys like McManus, you might also like Bryson (Walk in the Woods) Not as silly/funny as McManus, but more serious comedy.

His article will be sorely missed, I have alwasy enjoyed his writings.

As a kid I was chased many times across pastures by cows and bulls, many times when I see a little creek through a pasture I think of his chasing bovine story of the nemesis cow dying in the fishing hole.

His stuff is great, I've had to revert to buying hardback books of his. I've worn out a paperback copy of "A Fine and Pleasant Misery".
