Default Where do the teenagers hang out?

Shad that is. I have fished Plo before the year they introduced shad into that fishery (1980). In all that time, I have only seen the young and the old shad free swimming. The young ones are generally 1-2.5 inches and can be seen pushed to the surface, schooling at the surface or filling up our finders in the summer and fall. I have also seen the 10-13 inch adults up in the coves spawning then dying in the spring. My question is where do the 4-8 inch shad hang out and how much of the consumable forage does that size represent? I suspect the 4-8 inchers are the most desirable for predator fish. The only mid sized shad I have seen are in the gullets of wiper or the few walleye I have kept.

Has anyone seen (either free swimming or in the gut of fish) the 4-8 inch shad at Pueblo?

Although scribed as a question, I pretty much know the answer…trying to solicit feedback on (1) sightings and (2) implications on bait size choice.

Yeah to tell you the truth....I haven't really ever seen too many shad that size. I usually spot the schools of small ones or the adults swimming around the docks. I never really thought about this question.

I guess they are out getting into trouble like human teenagers.....humpin each other and chasing wipers I bet

In April of last year while fishing the west end of P-low we had Grebes hanging around the boat and every ten or 15 minutes or so we had a grebe come up with a 5-6 inch shad hanging from it's bill. I suspect they were suspended down 20 feet in 45 f.o.w.

i believe the 4-8 inchers are the ones you see as the big shad balls deeper down in the water .

the older ones (come to the top to die off) and the fry come up but the middle size ones stay down in the water.

this is just my opinion but thats what i think

Suspended for sure. I've been over those big schools of shad, dropped a jigging spoon down, and snagged a few just to see what size they are, and sure enough had 5" to 6" shad on.

I haven't seen them schooled like WS has, at least not of that size.
