Default Question, Setting up LC reels with Lead Core?

I picked up some Line Counter reels this winter (Set of Daiwa AccuDepthPLUS LC47's and a set of LC27's).

and want to set up 2 with Lead Core. Questions is "How Much Line". I have 2 100 yard spools of 18lb Lead Core.

Should I load all 100 yards and then a 20ft mono leader spliced in?
Should I put on some backing then splice in 5 colors then a leader?
Will full spools of lead core get to deep to fast to close to the boat?

Anyone who has a setup that works and can save me some trial & error would be helpful.

Thanks; Mark

I load 100 yards of Lead Core on the reel and tie a 20 foot leader to the end of it...many people tell me I don't need that much leader but it works for me. Keep in mind that when you have the lead core out, the leader will rise in the water column and you may not be as deep as you think. I don't have a good idea how much the leader will rise. I guess at it.

The variables that affect the depth of the lead core are line weight, speed of the boat, amount of line released, type of lure and pop gear, if any, on the end of the leader.

IMO it's not deep enough in most area lakes to need 100 yds of lead core and depending on which size reel you bought, you may not have enough room for the whole spool. Having some backing is more important than having lots of lead core to put out - 5 or 6 colors is plenty and with the line counter I don't pay much attention to the colors. You'll definitely want a leader - I like mono so you get some stretch (the lead core doesn't) - how long of a leader will probably be debated here, but I like ~10-20'.

Probably wont need to use all 100 yards, likely wont be able to fit it on the reel anyway.
Average is 5 ft./color, one color is 10 yards, with 100 yards you can get (on average) a lure to 50 feet deep...for lakers or kokes you might need that but for walleye you wont.

Really depends on what you are targeting but a leader is required.

Only if you toss your reel into the water... Now, without being a smarta$$, it wont matter/determine depth that which is still on the reel. You could have a million yards of lead on the reel, what matters is how much you have in the water.

I fish for walleye only with my leadcore, 20 feet of mono backing (20lb test) then 5 colors of lead, then 20 feet of 12lb mono as a leader.

If I need to get deeper than that I use snap weights or dipseys...I am not a downrigger guy.

i have 100 yds of leadcore on my reels with 50 feet of 14 lb mono leader. i have never had more than 9 colors out, but mostly use only 3-4 colors. it depends on your lure if the leader will rise, the only thing i have found to rise is cow bells. if you are using any kind of diver it will be below the depth of your leadcore. with my 50 ft leader most lures will be3-5 feet deeper. always use your leadcore from the back half of your boat, and you won't have any trouble but if you use it from the front of your boat it can git tangled up in your prop.

Thanks for the replies. I want to get it right the first time!
I picked up a set of Daiwa AccudepthPLUS LC47's and a set of LC27's.

The LC47's will hold a lot, 10 colors for sure. I'm thinkn all 100 yards of lead on the 47's, some backing then a 12lb leader like setthehook said. The LC27's are going to get 12lb line for planer boards.
Also, reels will be sitting on Daiwa Heartland 7'6" Med-Light Downrigger rods. D762MLS-G

All new stuff! Can't wait to use this set up.

Just remember:
Once leadcore hits the thermocline, it tends to “flatten” out, not sinking beyond the thermocline.

Here is the rule of thumb I have read several times.
3 colors 15 feet down, 5 colors 25 feet, 8 colors 30 feet and 9 colors 35 feet.
