Default Good News - Bad News Harriman Lake

I walked over to Harriman earlier this week and noticed a big backhoe and a couple of fellers from Denver Water doing some surveying. Stopped to ask what was going on and was told that Denver Water is concerned about the sustainability of the dam and they are planning to drain the lake next year and build a new dam.

He also mentioned that 700 LMB were just released so I ran back home and grabbed a rod and a rattle trap. Sure enough plenty of decent LMB's cruising the rip rap and sunning themselves in the shallows.

man, we were catching a bunch of small cats, I was hoping they'd get a chance to grow up a bit.

That sucks! and what about the tigers that they stocked last year I guess i'm gonna have to work that lake a lot this year because its gonna take a while for it to recover. But theres still some nice bass in there. saw one that took a swing at my bait that was easily over 3lbs and landed one last year that was around the same.

I wonder if they are going to completely drain it or just draw it down really low, and what they plan on doing with the fish in there??

I know of a few lakes up here in Weld county that are drained for repair................DOW shocked out as many fish as they could and put them in a near-by pond. When the repairs are done...........DOW will re-shock the fish and put the same amount back into the lake when it's filled. They did a pretty good job....................we'll see how the fishing fairs when they are full again.

DOW keeps all this info hush.............so that people don't run out and put extra pressure on the fish that are crowded together in the "holding pond".

I hope DOW does the same for your Harriman fishing hole...............I'm sure they will with the recent stockings or musky and bass.

the dow doesn't always do that mogul buster.

purdy mesa reservoir, aka hollenbeck, on the west slope, the lake that holds the state record bluegill by weight and also had many big largemouth bass, was drained a few years ago and juniata reservoir is the reservoir right above it. The DOW did not salvage the fish.

Hopefully that doesn't happen in this case, it is the east slope of colorado so there is a chance the DOW will try to salvage the fishery.

Well that sucks...I just started fishing there, and though I have yet to land anything, it sure looks like a promising lake.

Can you float tube it?

I think there is a sign prohibiting floatation devices if I remember right.
