Depends on what you do on the water. What kind of boat, what kind of fishin'...?

16 ft Northwood w/ 45hp main motor. Mostly like to troll for walleye and wiper.

...then you need a little kicker gas motor for the back and a remote controlled bow mount. Use the kicker to troll when it's really windy and the remote control for calmer conditions.

A transom mount electric will not give you the boat control on windy days
that a bow mount will.

A bow mount is not meant to troll with. It is better suited for boat control. A kicker, as stated above would be a better choice

Everybody has an opinion! With a 45 you should be able to troll pretty well. If you can troll down to 1.7-1.8mph I would not worry about buying a gas kicker motor unless you are trying to keep hours off of your 45. Most trolling is done between 1.8mph and 2.5mph. Anytime you want to go slower than that an electric will work great. The bow mount will give you the most control over the boat becasue it is pulling not pushing. The transom mount might give you the most comfort since you could run it from your seat (if the boat is tiller) or by connecting it your main outboard and using the steering wheel. Electric motors are great for slow trolling worm harnesses, jigs, or anytime stealth is an issue.

I had a 16 ft bass tracker with a 40hp motor that I trolled with. If you need to troll slower, throw out a drift sock off of the front of your boat. I could troll slow enough to drag a crawler harness with the drift sock out.
