Default Tip for tying on Jerkbaits, crankbaits, etc

I just discovered something over the last week or so that really made me feel quite stupid for not discovering earlier. I've accumulated a "broken box" of lures over the years that didnt' seem to run correctly in the water. I've always been confused why a rapala type lure would run correctly on one cast and then run completely different on another. I tried bending the rings, removing/adding split rings, etc. I wondered if water had flooded the hollow lure? Then I realized, my "broken lure box" was getting composed of mainly jerkbaits, cranks, etc. Well I found out why....it was all in the knot I was using. I'm sure this is common knowledge for most, but since I discovered this, my "broken lure box" is now empty!!!! I can't believe it took this long for me to figure out, but I thought I'd share the tip for those who are still in the dark.

That's good advice. Unless I'm fishing bait, I usually just use these....

I've always used a loop knot to tie on any crank or jerkbait...............It's a sturdy proven knot that allows freedom of movement.......same as the Rapala knot. I never tie to split rings...........they slip around and the risk of your line getting freyed by the ends of the ring are high. I've also had a big fish thrash around so much that it somehow spun the knot into the area of the split ring where you can add/remove them............and then he damn near had the line all the way off the split ring when I landed him. To me..........split rings are for hooks........not for line.

Never had a problem with split rings either, though I use these now. Much more friendly to changing lures:

Called Norman Speed Clips.
You can find them at BPS in the aisle with all the swivels and weights.
