Default Poll: Micro Guides and Spiral Wraped guides

I'm looking at buying a few blanks and building them just to sell them, nothing fancy, just looking at building some nice rods that I'll most likely sell in the $120 range, just not sure if folks would be willing to drop $120 for a custom built micro guided spiral wrapped rod.

My wrap work has gotten a ton better since I did those two rods. I am curious to find out if the painted one's finish holds up. I had another person request a paintjob on a new rod and I didn't want to do it until I found out that it held up. The guides I wrapped for Kurt on his last Micro re-wrap came out real nice, and I'm going to up the ante on this next one and try to do trim wraps on both sides of the guide. Trim, then the wrap, with forhan locking wraps, then the same trim on the end.

Depending on the results of the poll, I may just use standard Alconite new concept guides.

What is the benefit, if any, to micro guides?

I have a spiral wrapped ice rod and like the way it performs. It looks a little strange if you're not used to the idea, but it performs well. The guides on it are standard size, with an oversize tip.

Micros do two things really and the benefits of it are often times debated over which property of the guides is causing the results.

It takes weight off the rod, while it may only be 1/4 to 1/2 oz, it feels like a lot more because the weight it taken off the end of the rod.

The smaller guides will tame line lash.

The added benefit of a farther cast is debated.....whether it's the reduced weight causing a faster response from the tip or the reduced line lash it to be seen.

The spiral wrap of course runs the line to the bottom of the rod with the reel still being on the top. It keeps the rod from wanting to twist under load.

Boyd Duckett has started his own rod company based on the whole micro guide theories. I hear very good things on tour about this new phenom. They are called micromagic rods (I believe) They are selling very well in the Deep South.

There's been a little bit about them, Carrot stix also has micro guided rods. Kistler will re-guide any Kistler rod with micro guides for a price. I've done plenty of re-guide jobs, and will a rod if you want.

One of Boondock's Kistler rods, medium heavy action tip weighted so I could adjust the guide placement and verify proper alignment.

I am tip-toeing into the micro world...built a few lindy rig rods with micros but did not spiral them. I do think on a quality rod the micros do enhance the feel by reducing the weight.

Did you order the reinforced tips yet? I have a few spares but would like to get a set of beefier tips on mine.
