They're really hard to catch, but there is a method that is pretty much a guarantee. First, you need to find out where they live. Then, once they have dozed off, you crawl into their cave and...

I'm no Pike King either but it seems whenever you specifically target them, they are harder to catch.... I go with a 7 ft Cabelas med action spinning and usually 20 lb fireline or similar with a 12 lb leader of flourcarbon... Or just a 7 ft hvy trolling rod from Cabelas with a garcia 6000c and some kind of crank or spinner bait...
Oh, by the way, I NEVER let the slimy bast--rds into the boat..... we just look at em and release em... or they self release.... I still can't master the art of the "Y Bone's"...
so they don't come home with me as table fare. Someday... maybe...

Gone from throwing MH Fast 6'6", with 30lb test & 6-8" cranks
to... 8 wt silly stick, wf8-f, direct to 20 pound Flouro stumpy leader, & big ass flies...

But my favorite(most fun) this past year has been
7' Light St Croix
shimano saros 1000f
6 pound Fireline
12-15 Flouro Leader
1/8 ounce lipless cranks
