Default 2 mid range rod/reels or 1 high end rod/reel???

I got $200 to spend at Cabelas. Do I buy 2 midrange rod/reel combos ($50 reel and $50 rod) or do I buy 1 nice rod/reel combo ($100 reel and $100 rod). I plan to use it to troll for trout and whatever bites. Here are my thoughts

For the 2 midrange rod/reel combos - maybe there's not much a difference between $50 reel and a $100 reel. Same for rods. So I'm better having 2 sets instead of one. I'm no pro tournament fisherman so doesnt really matter.

For the 1 rod/reel combo - there IS a big difference that is worth the money. I take good care of my stuff so it will last a while and it will be nice to have a sweet equipment.

Would like to hear what the veterans on this forum think. Thanks

Casting or spinning?
If casting spend at least $100 on the reel.

Shouldn't matter if you are using it for trolling. Go cheap brother, especially if you are fishing for trout. What do you troll with mainly and we can get you some suggestions on specific set-ups.

Spinning not casting. I could never cast like you Boon.

I just got into trolling at the end of last year. I was trolling with hardbaits - stuff that ran 10-15 ft below surface. Rapalas and stuff. Also some cowbell action. Picked up some wally boards. I'm pure recreation fisher.

I read the reviews and seems like Shimano is the brand to go with. The last reel I bought was a Daiwa 10 yrs ago. Still works.

For sure two combos!
A 4000 size spinning reels. Cabelas has big sales on their house rods several times a year.
Missed the trolling part

cabelas has some combo deals that are very good now. if you want to go top end they have the shimano symetreand the xml combo for$199.98 or you can go midrange with thespirex and the fish eagle combo for $109.98

if your max is $200 all cabelas rods cost $8.00 ea for shipping and 2 reels will be another $8.00 shipping

Spend the whole $200 on a shimano ci4.

Than save up and get NRX rod, you will slay the fish!

If your not happy with the purchase I'll buy it for 50% off.

Lol 55% still good.

All joking aside like the folks above mentioned for trolling go cheaper.

If you're going to be trolling get two rod & reel combos, plus two rod holders if you don't aleady have them. I'm not real familiar with the lower end rods at Cabela's, but for the reels you've got to get Pflueger Trion (size 30 or 35 is ideal for various kinds of trolling in CO). Put some 6lb & 10lb trilene xt green or suffix on there & you'll be set (you get 2 spools with each reel so get 6 & 10# test) . Good luck!
