Default Aurora/ Wiper?

Can anyone tell me if they still stock Wiper there? I remember reading somewhere a couple of years ago that they were going to stop stocking them?

I spent about a dozen mornings last spring fishing along the dam. While most of the hundeds of Wipers that swam by me mocking my efforts were in the 5-10 lb range, I thought I saw some much smaller one's mixed in?

Neal, not sure about the stocking but I've seen the same
size wipers too. They seem to be very elusive to catch on artificials. Last year I spent most of my Aurora Res time on the water trying to entice bigger smallmouths.
This year I'm going to do all wiper all the time.
A few years ago the jerkbait bite was pretty decent especially trolling. Have you had any luck with swimbaits?
If so, do they hit them with the same force as jerkbaits?
I think if hooked a 12 lb. wiper in my float tube I would have to change my pants. Good luck.

Why is that? Do they have a short life span?

Wipers don't really breed. They are a hybrid.

Edited to add: Hybrid striped bass, like many hybrids, experience great difficulty reproducing naturally. Eggs and sperm produced by hybrids are usually weak or improperly formed. The same is true of any fry that might be produced by chance fertilization. For this reason, hybrids are considered “functionally sterile,” and their populations are totally dependant on repeated stockings (from Indiana DNR)

I suck at catching Wipers!!!!! Especially at Aurora!!!! But I will be out there trying again this spring.

I had one that looked about 10 lbs try to take a tube jig out of the mouth of a 3lb smallmouth I had hooked

Hi,

Aurora Reservoir gets wipers stocked every few years as fingerlings, so one will see different age classes.
