Default Lowrance - HDS 5 vs Elite-5 Fishfinder/GPS Chartplotter

Just wondering what people's opinions are on both units and what makes the HDS worth $200 more?

Only reason I ask is because tax returns are coming in here soon and I am thinking pretty hard about investing in a boat of some kind. Only gunna have around $5500 give or take to get a boat.. And that includes any money i will have to spend on electronics ect.

I appreciate ANY info.... Suggestions... Comments... Experiences... Ect ect both good and bad!

Thanks in Advance,

Ricky

elites got the cheap little plastic mount , not sure you could even put on ram mount, elite has uniplug power/sonar not good fro someone that what compatable sonar/transducer with other hds units. stand alone without those issues it is probably a fine basic sonar. the other issues pushed me to spend for the hds .

Ive got the HDS-5. With the proper home computer software you can create the most detailed lake maps imaginable. Pretty cool.

Did you find a job? Thought you were laid off?
Should be able to find something pretty nice in the price range.
What kind of boat are you looking for? Shop out of state too.

If you buy before mid February, you can take about $50 - $100 off of any hds system, maybe more. Mail in rebate expires late Feb though.

Thanks for the info bobco!! Sucks it's got a crappy mount.. but thats def. not a deal breaker for me I will be using this as a stand alone unit.. And dont plan on swapping it out with any other HDS units... So i dont think thats a factor for me either .

Creating lake maps is def. a feature that i want!! Are you saying that the HDS-5 creats maps that are far superior to the maps that would be created from data that was gathered from the elite-5?

I actually did finally find a job!! Thanks for asking Started it on last monday so today was the end of the 1st week of training... So far so good!! Seems like a good place to work and people seem to be really nice!

only boat i hve ever owned was a 12' alum. with a 3hp motor LOL... So i am def. hoping to get something descent for that range... Though while looking at boats on the web.. sure wish i had closer to 12k LMAO

I am actually looking for a fish/ski type of boat... it will primarily be used for fishing.. but def. want to be able to take the kids/family/friends out to the lake and pull them on a tube or ski or wakeboard or whatever. Doesnt have to be the best at pulling.. but good enough to atleast get someone up. I really like having an open bow... Thinking kids can ride up there or whatever.. then i can build a removable casting deck to go up there when im out fishing.

I have been looking at craigslist in colorado, nebraska, oklahoma, wyoming and arizona... Like I said.. sure wish i had 12k LMAO..

Although this is what i am looking for as far as purpose... I am really open to any info or suggestions that anyone can supply me with... Once i actually get the $$$ in hand i will prob. start another thread asking for more info from people who have more experience/knowledge than I do.

Saw the rebate... Unfortunately I dont think I will be in a position to buy the unit before it ends on feb 12th. Slight possibility ... Sure I hope i can... but doubting it.. I do appreciate the info though!! Where did you pick up your HDS-5 unit?
