Default Two questions about fire extinguishers

First is how often do they need to be re charged mine is 5 yrs old now. And second what is the legality or rules on a boat . The factory placed it to the right if the drivers seat in open space. I want to relocate it under a rod locker that I can easily reach from the drivers seat. Is there a rule for its placement or do you just have to have one somewhere on the boat. Trying to avoid a lecture if I ever get checked thanks

they should be serviced each year, and there is no rule of where to place them. in a boat it wouldn't hurt to service them once a month, yourself. the reason is that the pounding a boat takes will pack the powder tight and it might not work when you want to use it. to service it your self, turn it upside down and hit it several blows from a rubber hammer or even a wood 2X4, this will loosen any powder that is packed down. have the pros do it if your guage is out of the green. some extinguishers do not have a guage, have those done once a year by a service. as for location, it should be close to the driver, because if needed there will almost always be someonein that seat

Very interesting, did not know that. Ex fireman, true?

What about flipping it upside down for one month then right side up for one month, repeat?

... in addition to inverting and thumping...
check to make sure the gauge is in the green and in good condition...

...that the "pin" is in place to prevent accidental discharge and lightly secured to prevent it from falling out, but not secured so that a brisk tug won't remove it...

... and that the hose end/ nozzle is free and clear of debris or bug egg plugs...

and yes, 15 yrs in the fire service and i outranked byron by achieving the rank of department chief (doesn't stop him from trying to boss me around though... keyword being "trying" )

I've seen you two on the water, Byron has velcro on his pants and drivers seat...you have ADD or would make a good waitress...

Probably an age thing, right? Make the younger kid do all the work.

Well...I don't own a boat anymore...but if I did...and it was insured...and it required an extinguisher to put it out... I'd just as soon jump over the side rather than have it repaired ..or get blown up fighting a fire...burn baby burn..

Either that or turn it over to the professionals...You know...pull up next to Byron and itsabigun...
