WS,

If we believe those numbers then there are as many wiper in the lake as largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass combined. Doesn't sound right to me. I imagine where they place the nets has alot to do with the numbers they get.

Still, its interesting.

Wipers are the warm water trout for the agency formerly knows as DOW. I'd believe it.

Ed
keep in mind those nets went in in oct if i remember right and left out all night. each year they are put in the same place. so that is an average that they can compare to each year. taken over a period of years a trend develops. you also have to take into consideration that you are comparing apples to oranges, as bass are cover oriented and wipers roam the open water. if the nets were put out in the daylight houres the bass would remain about the same but the wiper count would drop to almost nothing. as noted no trout were caught in the nets for the same reasons at that time of year the trout are deep in open water.

when they electro shocked the lake they went all over and found white crappie, big trout and a good population of yellow perch. so the bio mass study is good for establishing trends over a period of time so they can plant fish to maintain a good balence of predators to prey to keep the food chain healthy.

in 2011 they stocked channel cats, cuttbows, largemouths McConaughy rainbows, rainbows, walleye, and wipers. large mouth bass are stocked as orten as they can get them because they don't do well in pueblo

another thing that is showing up in creel surveys and other studies over the last ten years is that trout are no longer thought of as number one draw for fisherman in colorado. they still hold a high place in the economy of fishing, but the numbers trend is leaning more and more to the warm water fish.

Thanks WS, that explains alot.

If Pueblo was at full pool and stayed that way for an extended period (years), it would become a great largemouth lake.

Not gonna happen but its fun to dream.

It is also great to hear that warm water fishing is finally getting the attention it deserves.

look for even better news in the future if we can get the water. lack of water will hurt our warm water fishing more than anything else
