Default Earliest ice off for Granby

Ice break-up on Lake Granby happened on Thursday, April 12, the earliest ice free day in the 21st century.

And Northern Water Conservancy District officials say they could see no ice between the Farr Pumping Plant and Granby Dam on April 10, the earliest day shown in the records during the Plant's history.

The last remnants of ice were on Arapahoe Bay at the east end of the lake until Thursday morning. Most of the lake was free of ice by Monday afternoon, April 9.

Five of the first ice-free days for the main part of the lake (excluding the upper Colorado River portion of the lake) for the last 13 years were in April and seven in May in the period April 12 to May 18, as follows:

2000 May 6

2001 April 29

2002 April 19

2003 May 15

2004 April 14

2005 May 4

2006 May 1

2007 April 25

2008 May 18

2009 May 4

2010 May 1

2011 May 16

2012 April 12

The thin and mushy ice didn't prevent less prudent fishermen from getting out on it and resulted in three of them having to be rescued on Saturday, April 7.

Dan Matthews, the U.S. Forest Service manager for the Arapahoe National Recreation Area, stated that the courtesy docks on the lake have been on shore all winter and would be moved into the lake and anchored soon.

He wants to remind everyone that boats moored or in slips on the lake must have a 2012 ANRA boat sticker on their bow. Boats coming in for the day or for short periods do not need stickers since they have paid a use charge for their vehicles.
